Update on my New Years Resolutions

Hi Friends!52

Being that it’s the last blog post for the month of January, I figured I’d do a check up on my resolutions. As I mention in my New Years Resolutions blog post, I am a big supporter of people who like to make resolutions for the New Year. I hear so much disapproval from people thinking that you shouldn’t make them. Why does it affect your life if I want to make changes for myself in the New Year? Maybe you don’t think you need to make resolutions, and you can do whatever you want to. But I’m going to do me, as you are going to do you.

This year, I only made six bigger resolutions that I want to stick to, and I’m happy to say that I’ve kept up with them this month.

  1. Write in my journal more
  2. Use my planner to better organize my life
  3. Work on my potential book ideas
  4. Keep up with this blog throughout the year
  5. Adventure more this year
  6. Choose Happiness

The biggest one to me is number six. I made a choice to choose happiness this year, and to try not to live my life unhappy. I’ve had to make some life changes, but that’s part of the process. I am incredibly happy with those choices, and I believe this past month has been a success.

Did you keep your New Years Resolutions? It’s okay if you didn’t. Sometimes there is a little bump in the road, but that’s the beauty of life. You can always keep on driving, and maybe you’ll see less bumps as you go down that road. Or maybe you just need to make a turn or two to before you get back on track. It’s all okay my friends.

Taking A Page: What my Book is About

Hi Friends!51

Here is my fourth TAP(Taking A Page) of the year. This one is a bit shorter that my past ones, but I’m really happy I managed to write something somewhat decent. I wrote this in the middle of the night after a long brainstorming session, and I finally managed to pick what I want my story to be about.

~~~~~
After a lot of sifting through small ideas I’ve had, I finally decided on what I want to write about for my book. I’m not going into too much detail now, but I feel like what I did choose is right up my alley. It’s got a sort of science fiction, fantasy, and utopia type vibe. That may change as I begin the writing process, but that’s the idea right now.
I kind of already started small work on the idea. Just brainstorming some ideas relating to plot, characters, and settings. I think I’m more excited for world building than anything. My story world right now is most definitely going to end up being made up. However, I might base it off certain areas, I haven’t quite decided. That’s the beauty of writing a new book, you have that freedom to make a whole new world, loosely base it off the world today, or plop your story line down in the middle of New York.
I also have a few basic ideas for main characters, as I have been picturing them when I first came up with the story idea a while back. I’ve been kind of developing them along the way. Long story short, I’ve been staying up super late these days, as I keep getting ideas right before going to bed. That’s the best time to write after all.
Writing Vs. Speaking (Communication)
Hi Friends!50
What form of communication best suits you? Is it writing an email to your boss, or going in to speak directly? Is it writing a persuasive paper, or giving a speech? Yes, each one has its own strengths, and sometimes one can be more effective than the other in certain situations. But do you have to use that one that’s seen to be more effective? Not necessarily.
Some people aren’t big on writing. Either it’s just not their thing, or they just don’t feel like that is the best way of communication for them. This is something that most people can discover through writing papers for school. Either with not-so-good grades or just by if they enjoyed the process or not. That’s why when sometimes you can read a paper or a blog post from someone, you get a sense of passion behind their writing. It’s because they enjoyed the process of writing.
On opposite ends, some people aren’t big on speaking. As someone with severe anxiety about everything, a big portion comes from socializing with other people. Involved in this is giving speeches. But, it’s not that I’m terrible at speaking. I’ve been told that verbally I do a good job. It’s that in the moment that I’m speaking, I’m having so much anxiety that I can’t enjoy the process. I can’t live in the moment. So half the time when I finish a speech, I blank out most of it. So when someone tells me I did a good job, I can’t reflect back and agree because I don’t know what in the hell I said in the first place. I find that a good speaker is someone where you can hear the passion and confidence in their voice. Because they enjoy every moment of it.
But, the beauty of a good speaker or a good writer is magical. Someone who shows true passion and confidence is breathtaking and eye-catching. You want nothing more than to hear or read what they have to say next. Not one method is better than the other. It’s all about the speaker/writer that makes a speech or a paper.
Taking A Page: Starting a New Semester
Hi Friends!
49
Photo created by me
Here is my third TAP(Taking A Page) of the year. I don’t know if I am going to keep Thursdays to being just a TAP kind-of-day. It’s just kind of worked out to do one TAP a week. So I guess I’ll do them on Thursdays for now, but that isn’t set-in-stone. I might switch it up occasionally. We’ll just see how it goes.
~~~~~

One thing I have to start off with is that my first week back to school was a mess. My schedule this semester is Monday-Wednesday. I didn’t go to my Monday classes because my driveway was still covered in ice, and I couldn’t get my car out. I did get to go to my Tuesday class, but that was such a drag. Only eight people showed up to the class, and my professor was so excited about having more room for conversation. The thing I wasn’t looking forward to was the workload in the class. She is the kind of professor that when you finish all the assignments, she’ll tack on more just for the hell of it. Let’s just say that by the time I had the class again this week, we only had five people in class.

As for Wednesday, I was on campus for over 8 hours. My first two classes were beyond boring, but they were somewhat tolerable. But, my 5 o’clock class was ridiculous. It is a 2 hr 45 minute class, and I ended up leaving early because the professor was rambling on and wasting my time. Of course another 30 students were also leaving as well, so it wasn’t just me. But, he was just one of those professors that kept repeating the same thing he had already said twenty times.

So far it looks like this semester is going to be a drag, but maybe I am going to try to make the best of it. The only good thing that has happened so far is that in my Research Methods class we watched an entire episode of Blues Clues, because my professor thought it really taught a message on the research method… #college

How I’m Planning In The New Year (My 2017 Erin Condren Planner)

Hi Friends!77

For someone who has hardly any impulse control, I would have to say, I am not one to go and spend a lot of money on something. Especially if I can get a knock off version of that something for a heck of a lot cheaper. However, on Cybermonday, I gave in and bought myself an Erin Condren planner. Of course, I originally was buying one for my mother for Christmas, but I ended up buying one for myself too. With the discounts, I only paid around $60 bucks for both planners, when the usual rate is much higher.

img_20170112_131740_684Planning has always been a necessity for me to keep my life together. Since I was a little girl, I would plan out my day with lists. When I started to get older, I switched to using calendars, then finally planners. My mom and I both share a love for organizing this way, so this Christmas was exciting for both of us.

I’ve never had an Erin Condren planner before, but I have watched so many videos on them that I feel like I have. I am also into stickers, and I am looking into buying some for my planner. So if you have any planner sticker shops to recommend on Etsy, let me know in the comments below!

I am so super stoked to use my new planner. Nothing makes me happier than a fresh start, and this planner is something I have been looking forward to for a while.

Taking A Page: I’m Writing A Book?

Hi Friends!48

Here is my second TAP(Taking A Page) of the year. I am really excited about this journal entry, as it is full of excitement for a new project I plan on working on in 2017.

~~~~~
One of my personal goals for 2017 is to really set out time to start ideas for a book. I had the idea to do it in 2016, but with how busy I became between work and school that went out the window quickly. So naturally, once it became time for me to sit down and think about some life goals for 2017, the book idea came back. Of course, it actually came back at one in the morning, and I ended up not sleeping that night. I mean, when the inspiration to write a book comes to you, you best get a pen and write your ideas down before your head explodes… Well, maybe that’s just me.
I’ve started brainstorming some ideas, and I am hoping to come up with a semi-potential book idea to really get down and work with. My brainstorming process so far has been mostly me trying to go to bed at night. I mean, I’ll lay down with my only intention being that I want to go to sleep. Just before I get to reach slumber, I usually get an idea in my head, and it takes off before I have much choice in the matter. After a few minutes or so, I usually get up, turn on my light, and write down my idea. Sometimes it will take me five-to-ten minutes, and sometimes it’ll take me an hour or two.
All I know is that once you open that door to brainstorming, it is hard to shut it completely again. Sometimes when you think you manage to close that metaphorical door, a large gust of wind will open the door… At two o’clock in the morning.
Snow: In the South vs. In the North
Hi friends!47
On Friday, down south in Georgia, we got a little bit of snow. Accompanying that snow was a good sheet of ice under it. Of course, the entire time we were preparing for the snow, I go onto social media to see the usual northerners making fun of the so-called panic us southerners were going through. It got me thinking about it, and I have to say that our panic is sort-of justified.
~~~~~

In the north, when it gets colder, they usually experience a lot of snow and ice. Not just for a day or a few days, but it can go up to weeks. So naturally when it gets to December or the early months of the year, they prepare themselves because they expect it will happen. They don’t have much people panicking, because they live through it every year.

Unlike the North, the South doesn’t experience up to weeks of snow and icy conditions during the winter time. Yes, we do see more ice than snow itself, but that ice usually is gone mid-day because it is a bit hotter down here. Not only that, we don’t have an idea time period that we are going to get this snow or ice. One year, it could snow on a random weekday in December, the next year in January, the next year in February, or multiple times over those three months. It’s typically only for a few days at most if we do see it, but even then it’s usually not really snowing for more than one day.

Of course we do have those random times where we get a good amount of snow. An amount that we weren’t prepared for. Like in 2014 for example, the news downplayed the snow we were going to get, and it left children staying at school for the night because they couldn’t get home. It left people stranded on roads in the middle of nowhere because that was the only way to get home, and it wasn’t taken seriously enough for them allowed to be let off work early to make it home safely. It left most people having to try to walk home, and roads upon roads were left with abandoned cars. Let’s not get into how many accidents there were, because unlike the North, we don’t just go put snow chains on our tires unless we know for sure the snow will be really bad. If it doesn’t end up snowing, which a lot of the time it doesn’t when they say it will, then buying the snow chains would be pretty useless.

Instances like the snow we had in 2014, that left children stranded at schools overnight, people stranded in the middle of nowhere, and all the accidents that were caused is why people in the South go into a “panic” when the forecast says we’ll have snow. We have one really bad year out of maybe every 3-5 years that will stay on our minds, and we don’t want that to happen again. We’re not conditioned to expect a lot of snow each year, so we have a different reaction than those(like in the North) do. Just like when people in the North are complaining about 90 degree weather, people down South are conditioned to that weather, and are often seeing temperatures reaching around 100 degrees on Summer days. So they don’t have as much of a problem with it.

All in all, obviously it is really easy to call someone a little crybaby just because they are conditioned to something like you are. But, you don’t really know, until you see from the other persons point-of-view.

Taking A Page: Making Changes

Hi Friends!76

I wasn’t expecting doing a TAP(Taking A Page) so early on in the year, but here we are. I had a very interesting journal entry that I wanted to share, just because it really points out just how much I want to change in the new year. So here we go!

~~~~~
We’re not even that far into the new year, but my want to change a lot in my life is exploding. I have taken the day to reflect back on everything last year. I found that there are certain things, events, and people who were not worth the stress. I feel going into the new year I don’t want to have to look at those things everyday, and get stressed or annoyed because of how they impact my life.
One thing I’m fed up with is wasting my time on people who don’t put the same amount of effort into a friendship like I do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying people have to be perfect. But, when it comes down to the only time we hang out is when I ask, it’s kind of annoying after a while. The beauty of social media is you can see how much value you have in someone’s life pretty easily. As stalker-ish as that sounds, don’t judge! Everyone keeps an eye on their friends, that’s how social media works. Well for some people it only works so they can tell everyone their life problems on an hourly basis.
Anyway, after a lot of thought, I have already started on a people detox. I already feel better, just by not having to worry about if people are really my friends or not. That is one thing I have learned with being in college. You don’t have to spend your life trying to please people to keep them as your friends.
I want to change for the better this year. Last year, one of my new year resolutions was to be a better person. By “better” I mean, don’t judge others, be kinder, and keep an open mind. This year, I’m increasing that to being a better person, but also I want to make myself happy. That’s why this year, my motto will be “Choose Happiness”. Because, in the end, I really just want to be the happiest I can be. Making some changes will only be part in what I’ll have to do, but hopefully I will be the happiest I can be.
New Year Resolutions 2017
Hi friends!75
Happy new year everyone! It’s 2017, and there is a world full of adventures to look forward to in the new year. I have recently been reviewing tweets and blogs that say that making resolutions is pointless. The reasoning for that is you should strive to make changes to better your life. While I believe that is true(in my opinion), I do not agree that making New Years resolutions are pointless. It’s kind of like the concept of a starting a new project on the first day of the month, or starting a new diet at the beginning of a week. There is something about the beginning of a period of time verses randomly in the middle that gives you that extra push. Besides, why does it bother someone else how I choose to live my life? Why does it bother you that I make New Years resolutions, that I choose to make change in my life my way and in my own time schedule. I’m not telling you how you should be living your life, so don’t tell me how to live mine. Slight new year rant over haha.
Without further rambling, here are my resolutions for this new year:
  1. Write in my journal more
  2. Use my planner to better organize my life
  3. Work on my potential book ideas
  4. Keep up with this blog throughout the year
  5. Adventure more this year
  6. Choose Happiness
Unlike previous years, I decided to keep my list fairly simple this year. I’ve had years where my lists is 10 to 15 points long, and I thought it’d be better not to continue that. Besides, I can always add more as time goes on. I can make changes anytime during the year after all.
